The moment is optimal to alter Manchester United's formation - Amorim declares.

Man Utd players ahead of a match
Manchester United skipper Bruno Fernandes was one of seven senior stars to miss the Boxing Day triumph against Newcastle.

Boss Ruben Amorim argues that altering Man Utd's formation due to media pressure would have signaled "his demise" for him.

In a first against Newcastle United, Amorim moved away from his trademark three-at-the-back formation with wing-backs and opted to use an traditional four-man defense with two defensive midfielders.

He himself conceded this at times functioned as a six-man defensive block in the latter phase as his squad dug in for a crucial result - securing only their second clean sheet of the season.

Despite he once famously remarked that not even the highest authority could pressure him to adjust his system, Amorim asserts the option to play with different formations has consistently been part of his strategy.

However, he emphasizes he could solely implement the change when his team were faring sufficiently well - or else it would appear as if he was bowing to external pressure.

"At the time I arrived here the previous campaign, I realized maybe I lacked the players to excel in a back three, but it was the start of a journey," he stated.

"Our aim was to forge an philosophy. Now is a distinct moment. We are missing a full complement of players, and we must be flexible, so they see why we are changing.

"This isn't because of the influence of journalists, or the fans.

"Whenever the press talk about altering the system all the time, I can't change because the players will understand I'm altering things because of external voices and I believe that is a disaster for the manager.

"When we are performing strongly in our system, that becomes the right time to adapt.

"We will develop into a more complete squad because when our full complement of personnel return, we are not intending to use three defenders in every match."

Availability Challenges Loom Large

Having just two victories in their last eight outings before defeating Newcastle, it is arguable whether Amorim is accurate to claim his team have been in good form.

He is, nonetheless, working with a severely stretched squad, with seven first-team players already confirmed absent for the upcoming home game against struggling Wolverhampton Wanderers.

That total will rise if playmaker Mason Mount fails to shake off the knock that forced his withdrawal from the Newcastle game at the interval.

Captain Bruno Fernandes is among those who will miss the Wolves match, despite the fact he is reportedly pressing his boss to allow him to make a comeback after his hamstring problem.

"Bruno is already insisting he needs to train," revealed Amorim. "However there is no chance he is going to play against Wolves. No way. You can quote me on that."

Fernandes' Role Is Unwavering

However, the 31-year-old will likely continue to be deeply engaged, as while most injured players view matches from the stands, Fernandes was spotted keeping a close eye on the warm-ups from the mouth of the tunnel before the Newcastle game.

Amorim is sure his captain to continue providing insight.

"The guy is a leader," he affirmed. "He cannot be the type of player that when he is not playing, he's not talking and speaking. He's constantly communicating. That is the reason he's the skipper.

"There are negative aspects at times - the way he moves his arms - but he has a lot of good things. After he recovers, he goes to watch the other guys training. There are a lot of things that go unnoticed.

"I'm not sure if he desires my job or not, but he's a born leader. He is a true captain."

Return Timeline for Injured Personnel

While the specific date for Fernandes' comeback - and that of fellow injured stars like Kobbie Mainoo, Matthijs de Ligt, and Harry Maguire - remains unknown, before the conclusion of January, United will see the return of Noussair Mazraoui, Amad Diallo, and Bryan Mbeumo from international competition.
